What is a block sale?

Also called: block yard sale, street sale, block party sale · Used in United States and Canada

A block sale is when most households on a single street or block hold their garage sales on the same day and advertise them together.

What it actually means in practice

For buyers, park once and walk the block: you cover more sales in an hour than driving house to house. Bring small bills and a wagon if you expect furniture or bulky finds.

For sellers, split the cost of signs, flyers and online ads with neighbours and list one shared date and map. A block sale is one street; a community sale spreads across a whole neighbourhood or town, and a multi-family sale is several households at one address.

Community saleA community sale is many households in one street, subdivision or neighbourhood selling on the same agreed weekend, sometimes promoted with a single map or flyer. Dozens of sales sit within walking distance, which makes it the most efficient way to cover ground.Multi-family garage saleA multi-family garage sale is when two or more households pool their items at one driveway, yard or block for the same sale. Each family usually prices its own goods, and shoppers get several homes' worth of goods in one stop.Garage saleA garage sale is a household selling its own used belongings directly to walk-up buyers, usually from a driveway or garage, for a day or a weekend. Items are priced by the seller, cash is normal, and there is no shop, staff or warranty involved.Yard saleA yard sale is the same event as a garage sale — a household selling used goods to the public from its own property. The name reflects the geography: in regions where homes sit on front lawns rather than behind attached garages, the sale happens in the yard.
