What is a yard sale?
Also called: lawn sale, garage sale · Used in United States, especially South, Midwest and West
A yard sale is the same event as a garage sale — a household selling used goods to the public from its own property. The name reflects the geography: in regions where homes sit on front lawns rather than behind attached garages, the sale happens in the yard.
What it actually means in practice
People often treat the two phrases as different things, and search engines show them as separate queries, but functionally they are identical. What changes is the weather, the amount of lawn you have to lay out on, and which word your grandmother uses.
The practical difference is setup: a yard sale needs tables, covers for wind and rain, and a layout that works on grass. A garage sale can push everything against a wall and open the door.
