What is a verge sale?

Also called: disposal sale, garage sale · Used in Australia, especially Queensland

A verge sale is the Australian term for selling household goods laid out on the front verge — the strip between the pavement and the road — for neighbours to buy, usually before a move. Elsewhere in Australia it is a garage sale or a disposal sale.

What it actually means in practice

The word is regional in the same way 'stoop sale' is in American cities. If you are in Brisbane you will find verge sales; in other states the same event is listed under a different name.

Local councils differ on whether goods may sit on the verge at all and on how long they may stay there, which is exactly the sort of rule the city permit pages record.

Garage saleA garage sale is a household selling its own used belongings directly to walk-up buyers, usually from a driveway or garage, for a day or a weekend. Items are priced by the seller, cash is normal, and there is no shop, staff or warranty involved.Moving saleA moving sale is a garage sale with a deadline attached. The household is relocating, the removal van is booked, and anything that has not sold by a fixed morning is either carried, stored, given away or put out on the curb.
