What is an online garage sale?

Also called: virtual garage sale · Used in United States and Canada

An online garage sale means an in-person household sale that is advertised on the internet rather than only by a sign in the window. The goods, the address and the cash transaction are all still physical; what moved online is the discovery.

What it actually means in practice

Before listings sites, an online garage sale usually meant a group of neighbours posting on a community forum. Today it means a map, photos, dates and a price range visible before anyone leaves the house.

The separate category to be careful of is the genuinely online-only sale — an app or marketplace where goods ship. That is secondhand retail, not a garage sale, and it is what people mean by 'sites like Craigslist'.

Garage saleA garage sale is a household selling its own used belongings directly to walk-up buyers, usually from a driveway or garage, for a day or a weekend. Items are priced by the seller, cash is normal, and there is no shop, staff or warranty involved.Community saleA community sale is many households in one street, subdivision or neighbourhood selling on the same agreed weekend, sometimes promoted with a single map or flyer. Dozens of sales sit within walking distance, which makes it the most efficient way to cover ground.Flea marketA flea market is a recurring venue where multiple independent vendors rent space and sell goods — antiques, collectibles, junk, food. Unlike a garage sale it is a permanent or weekly business, the stock is bought to resell, and the prices reflect that.
