What is a flea market?

Also called: swap meet, fleamarket · Used in United States, Canada, Europe

A flea market is a recurring venue where multiple independent vendors rent space and sell goods — antiques, collectibles, junk, food. Unlike a garage sale it is a permanent or weekly business, the stock is bought to resell, and the prices reflect that.

What it actually means in practice

The confusion is understandable because the tables look identical. The difference is motivation: a garage-sale seller wants things gone by Sunday, a flea-market vendor wants a margin and will carry the unsold stock back next week.

'Swap meet' is the Florida and southeastern term for roughly the same thing. Because flea markets are fixed locations, they rank for '[city] flea market' while garage sales rank for 'near me this weekend'.

Garage saleA garage sale is a household selling its own used belongings directly to walk-up buyers, usually from a driveway or garage, for a day or a weekend. Items are priced by the seller, cash is normal, and there is no shop, staff or warranty involved.Car boot saleA car boot sale is a British and Irish market where sellers display goods from the boot of a car at a rented field, car park or rec ground. It is closer to a fleamarket than to a garage sale: many traders go weekly and buy stock specifically to resell.Estate saleAn estate sale liquidates an entire household at once — the furniture, the contents of every drawer, the garden and often the house itself — typically after a death, a move to smaller accommodation or a downsizing. It usually runs three to five days and is often handled by a professional company.
