What is a car boot sale?

Also called: car booting, boot sale · Used in United Kingdom and Ireland

A car boot sale is a British and Irish market where sellers display goods from the boot of a car at a rented field, car park or rec ground. It is closer to a fleamarket than to a garage sale: many traders go weekly and buy stock specifically to resell.

What it actually means in practice

The distinction matters if you are searching for local sales. In the UK, 'garage sale' returns fewer results than 'car boot sale' or 'jumble sale', and the events are organised differently — by pitch, on a weekend morning, with bargains expected rather than household clear-outs.

The unsorted piles are where the odd treasure turns up, and early arrival is the only strategy that works.

Jumble saleA jumble sale is a charity sale of donated goods, traditionally run by a church, school or scout group in a parish hall, with proceeds going to the organisation. It is the British equivalent of a church rummage sale, and the same scramble-at-the-bargain-stall format.Garage saleA garage sale is a household selling its own used belongings directly to walk-up buyers, usually from a driveway or garage, for a day or a weekend. Items are priced by the seller, cash is normal, and there is no shop, staff or warranty involved.Flea marketA flea market is a recurring venue where multiple independent vendors rent space and sell goods — antiques, collectibles, junk, food. Unlike a garage sale it is a permanent or weekly business, the stock is bought to resell, and the prices reflect that.
