What is a mystery garage sale?

Also called: mystery sale · Used in United States

A mystery garage sale is one where nobody selling knows what is in the boxes. It is typically a new homeowner clearing whatever the previous occupants left behind, so the goods are unsorted, unresearched and priced without any idea of what they might be worth.

What it actually means in practice

That ignorance is the entire appeal. Nobody has photographed the desirable items and listed them individually on a marketplace first, so unopened storage, old books, records, tools and boxed items can still surface at a garage-sale price.

It also means you are doing the work: no listings, no research, no returns. Bring a torch, expect to dig, and go early before the dealer sweep has been through.

Estate saleAn estate sale liquidates an entire household at once — the furniture, the contents of every drawer, the garden and often the house itself — typically after a death, a move to smaller accommodation or a downsizing. It usually runs three to five days and is often handled by a professional company.Garage saleA garage sale is a household selling its own used belongings directly to walk-up buyers, usually from a driveway or garage, for a day or a weekend. Items are priced by the seller, cash is normal, and there is no shop, staff or warranty involved.
