What is a consignment sale?

Also called: kids consignment sale, children's consignment sale, consignment event · Used in United States and Canada

A consignment sale is a seasonal pop-up sale, often in spring and fall, where many families drop off used kids' clothes, toys and baby gear. An organizer prices and displays them in one hall, and each seller gets a share of what sells, commonly about 60-70%, while the organizer keeps the rest.

What it actually means in practice

Unlike a garage sale, the consignor does not stay to haggle. The organizer takes a cut, items must pass a quality check, and buyers find many families' goods in one hall instead of driving house to house.

Volunteers and consignors often get a pre-sale, the last day is commonly half-price, and check recall lists before buying cribs or car seats. Sellers who want to keep every dollar can hold their own garage sale instead.

Rummage saleA rummage sale is run by a group — a church, school, club or charity — rather than a single household. Donated goods are pooled and sold, usually in a hall over one or two days, and the proceeds go to the organisation rather than to any individual seller.Community saleA community sale is many households in one street, subdivision or neighbourhood selling on the same agreed weekend, sometimes promoted with a single map or flyer. Dozens of sales sit within walking distance, which makes it the most efficient way to cover ground.Garage saleA garage sale is a household selling its own used belongings directly to walk-up buyers, usually from a driveway or garage, for a day or a weekend. Items are priced by the seller, cash is normal, and there is no shop, staff or warranty involved.
