How the estimate works

Average price per category. For each category we take every item in our garage sale price guide, find the midpoint of its low and high price, and average those midpoints. Your item count times that average is what your items would bring if every one sold at a mid-range tag price.

Sell-through and haggling. Not everything sells, and many buyers ask for a lower price. The calculator multiplies the tag-price total by your sell-through share, then takes off your haggling discount to give estimated gross takings.

Costs and time. Signs, ads, a permit fee and snacks come off the gross to give net profit. Hours are 4 hours of setup (sorting, cleaning and pricing) plus the hours your sale is open, and profit per hour is net profit divided by those hours.

Common questions about garage sale profit

How much does an average garage sale make?

There is no reliable national average, because it depends on how many items you have and what they are. A few boxes of clothes and books may bring in tens of dollars, while a full garage with furniture, tools, bikes and electronics can bring in several hundred. Count your own items in the calculator for an estimate based on our price guide ranges.

What share of items sell at a garage sale?

Plenty of items go home unsold. The calculator starts at 60% sell-through as a middle estimate. Well-priced, clean and well-advertised sales sell more; a rainy day, high prices or a quiet street sell less. Big items such as furniture and tools usually carry most of the total.

Is a garage sale worth it compared with donating?

Compare your estimated net profit and profit per hour with the time it takes. If a sale works out to only a few dollars an hour, donating everything or selling a few big items online may be the better choice. Many sellers do both: hold the sale, then donate what is left the same afternoon.

How can I raise my garage sale total?

Price clearly with stickers, put big items near the driveway, advertise a few days ahead, post your sale on a map, and start bundle deals in the last hours. Bring enough change so no buyer walks away because you cannot break a large bill.
