A driver has about two seconds to read your sign. Most garage sale signs fail that test — too small, too wordy, taped to a pole at knee height. Here's what works, tested by thousands of Saturday mornings.
The two-second rule
Your sign needs exactly four elements, readable from a moving car: the words GARAGE SALE, an arrow, the street address, and the day/hours. Nothing else. If a driver can't get all four in two seconds, the sign is decoration.
- Size: letters at least 3 inches tall — a thick marker, not a ballpoint pen
- Color: black letters on fluorescent poster board (yellow, pink or orange); one consistent color for all your signs so drivers can follow them
- Material: rigid board or corrugated plastic — paper folds in wind and dies in rain
- Arrow: huge and unambiguous. The arrow is the whole job.
Placement strategy
Work backwards from the nearest busy road. Put your first sign at the closest major intersection, then one at every turn a driver must make, then one at the sale itself. Five to eight signs covers most neighborhoods. A sign a driver sees after the turn is wasted; place each one 50–100 feet before the decision point.
Remember the near-universal rules: private property only (ask the owner), never on utility poles or traffic signs, and take them down the same day — leftover signs are why some cities started requiring permits.
Signs bring drive-by traffic. The map brings everyone else.
Street signs catch people already in the neighborhood. Everyone else finds sales on their phone. A free listing puts your sale on the local map with photos, hours and your price range — and shoppers browsing nearby sales plan their Saturday route around it the night before.
Frequently asked questions
What should a garage sale sign say?
Only four things: 'GARAGE SALE', a large arrow, the street address, and the day and hours. Letters should be at least 3 inches tall in black marker on bright poster board so a driver can read it in about two seconds.
How many garage sale signs should I put up?
Five to eight. One at the nearest major intersection, one at every turn a driver must make on the way, and one at the sale. Place each sign 50–100 feet before the turn it announces.
Is it illegal to put garage sale signs on telephone poles?
In most cities, yes. Signs generally must be on private property with the owner's permission and removed promptly after the sale. Poles, traffic signs and medians are the most commonly fined locations.
