The short answer: in most US and Canadian cities, an occasional residential garage sale needs no permit at all. But a meaningful minority of cities do require one — usually free or under $15 — and nearly every city regulates two things regardless: how often you can hold sales, and where you can put signs.
The three rule patterns
City rules almost always fall into one of three buckets:
- No permit needed (most common) — e.g. Toronto, Edmonton, Ottawa, Boston, Portland, Minneapolis. Occasional residential sales are simply allowed.
- Free or cheap permit required — e.g. Washington DC (free, online), Baltimore (free), Charlotte (~$10), Tampa (~$10), Las Vegas, Tucson and Mesa (free, online). Usually takes five minutes to get.
- Frequency caps without a permit — e.g. San Diego allows up to three sales per address per year; many cities cap at two to four per year to keep driveways from becoming unlicensed shops.
Sign rules are the rule everyone breaks
Almost every city — permit or not — requires signs to stay on private property (with the owner's permission) and to come down promptly after the sale. Utility poles, traffic signs, medians and boulevards are the classic violations that draw fines. If your sale is listed online with a map pin, you barely need street signs anyway.
Canada specifics
Canadian cities are broadly permissive. Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Hamilton and most others require no permit for occasional residential sales, and Quebec municipalities treat ventes de garage the same way — though some limit them to specific weekends in May and September, so check your borough's calendar. Sign placement rules apply everywhere.
How to check your city in five minutes
Search your city's official site (the .gov or .ca domain) for "garage sale permit" or "yard sale bylaw." Look for three numbers: sales allowed per year, days allowed per sale, and sign rules. Our city pages summarize permit conventions for every city we cover — find yours from the cities we cover, and each page's FAQ includes the local permit convention.
Once you're clear on the rules, post your sale free — your listing appears on the local map immediately, which does more advertising than any street corner sign.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to have a garage sale?
In most US and Canadian cities, no — occasional residential garage sales don't require a permit. Some cities (like Washington DC, Charlotte, Tampa, Las Vegas, Tucson and Baltimore) require a free or low-cost permit. Check your city's official website for 'garage sale permit'.
How many garage sales can I have per year?
Many cities cap residential sales at two to four per address per year, even where no permit is required. San Diego, for example, allows three per year. The cap is the rule sellers most often trip over.
Where can I legally put garage sale signs?
Almost universally: on private property, with the owner's permission, taken down promptly after the sale. Signs on utility poles, traffic signs, medians and public boulevards are prohibited in most cities and are the most common source of fines.
